Overview

Forensic medicine

Orthopaedic forensic medicine requires a competence that combines deep clinical and surgical knowledge with the principal institutions of civil, criminal and insurance law. Prof. Colao has worked as Court Expert Consultant (CTU) appointed by the Tribunal of Florence since 1992 and by the Court of Appeal of Florence since 1998 — a role that demands absolute impartiality toward the parties in dispute and methodological rigour in damage assessment. Over more than thirty years of expert activity, Prof. Colao has examined hundreds of case files across the main areas of orthopaedic-legal practice: medical professional liability (assessing clinical conduct against protocols and guidelines), road and private accident analysis, occupational diseases and service injuries for civil and military personnel, capacity-to-act evaluation and insurance policy analysis. The forensic assessment involves a thorough physical examination, critical review of clinical and imaging documentation, and the drafting of a technical report compliant with the evidentiary standards required by the code of civil procedure.

Techniques

Surgical and conservative approach

Court expert work (CTU) involves drafting a technical report filed with the court clerk's office, responding to specific questions formulated by the judge, and engaging in cross-examination with party expert consultants (CTP). Biological damage assessments follow the disability table criteria used in Italian case law and updated medico-legal schedules. Medical professional liability analysis draws on critical study of clinical records, operating protocols and reference scientific literature. Prof. Colao also acts as party expert consultant (CTP) in support of law firms and as consultant for insurance companies in the settlement of complex claims.
